To Kill a Mockingbird, not the Town and the Man

To Kill a Mockingbird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was instantly successful and has become a classic of modern American fiction. Born in 1926, Harper Lee grew up in the Southern town of Monroeville, Alabama, where she became close friends with the soon-to-be famous writer Truman Capote, but that’s not what make Monroeville great to me.

A friend of mine in Monroeville, Ron Oudenaarden suffering from diabetes, recently lost part of his right leg due to an infection in his foot. Ron is a pillar in the town of Monroeville, AL. Ron is a husband and father, loves his family and is in a very responsible management position at the local Pulp Mill.
When someone has a life changing experience they usually change their life. I’ve noticed that Ron seems renewed and is stronger than before. He’s been an example of how to turn lemons to lemonade. This event has affected all who know him as well.

Monroeville, AL is being horribly affected by today’s current economic events. While our unemployment rate in the State of Alabama has become somewhat stable at 9% Monroeville’s is 20%. The people of Monroeville are great Alabamians. As a whole they share strong Christian values and work ethic. Churches and Community have come together to help Ron and his family through these difficult times. It’s a display of small town rural America at its best! I’m proud of Monroeville and glad I know Ron Oudenaarden. We need to pray for this community and the man.

May God Bless you!
