Father’s Day…
I’ve been a Father for 27 Father’s Days as my oldest son is now 27. Being a Dad is the most rewarding accomplishment of my life. I’m not saying I’m good at it, but my ex and I must have done something right since our sons are great guys and they still like me. It seems sometimes, they like me best if there is food involved and can’t blame them as I love to share a meal with them too.
As a young man, I thought that accomplishments were measured by having a good job, big house, pretty wife, new car, etc… but new stuff gets old, needs to be replaced, painted, hauled off, well you get the picture (my pretty wife replaced me… for good reasons =/).
When I was about 30, I was convinced that I’d be a millionaire by 40 and was pretty close by most standards. But like they say; “Close only counts in Horseshoes and Atom Bombs” ‘Having Stuff’ really doesn’t come with many rewards. Sure, it’s nice to have lots of new shinny stuff, but I much rather prefer being a Father that my sons still like.
As I’ve become older, I believe, I’ve become a little bit wiser and if given a chance to do it all over again I think I’d be… more tolerant, less frustrated, take them to Church more often, lead as an example in my actions and not travel as much to name a few things. Most of my life, I’ve been pretty extreme. I wish, I’d been an extremely good Father when my boys were younger, and this desire leaves me with the challenge of being an extremely good Father now.
Happy Father’s Day!
